Dear Friend,

I feel like the term “Feminist” is a dirty word. I’m not sure why but I feel like people’s brains instantly go to the Portlandia feminist bookstore and they have their minds made up for what feminists should be and act like. Stereotypes of “angry feminists”, “slutty feminists”, “man-hating feminists” are always the first that come to mind, and I would like to create a group that explores these stereotypes, as well as come up with an understanding of why they are there and how to move past them.

As a tongue-in-cheek gesture, I would like to start a bi-monthly/monthly Feminist book club entitled “F L A P S” (acronym pending).

In terms of mood and the way I’d intend to approach it would be a sort of an open syllabus. Everyone would get the chance to recommend either an article,… current event, historical essay, short story, movie or adventure.

Severely lacking in my own feminist education, my idea is that I want to read what everyone else read as part of their liberal arts education. Men are invited and encouraged to be a part of this group and I would like some #$%*-ing levity-hence the name.

Some Topics Ideas I’ve been Thinking About

-Skype-In talk with Terri Kapsalis author of Public Privates
-Mooncycle iphone calendaring -post-gender day -Feminist anger management courses
-Annoying Jezebel article of the week
-Feminist Movie Night, where we watch movies off the http://bechdeltest.com/ list
-Reading small 2 books every 6 months?
-Fieldtrips!

To gauge interest in this endeavor I’m writing this letter to see if you would be interested in either contributing in the production of the group, the syllabus or would be interested in participating.

Best,

Molly Jo Shea

NEWS:

July 3, 2013
Fellows of Contemporary Art
970 North Broadway, #208
Los Angeles, CA. 90012

The Fellows of Contemporary Art are pleased to offer an open call for curatorial submissions for its Curator’s Laboratory program which originated with Catherine “Kitty” Chester’s generous gift to FOCA in 2007. FOCA is now publicly seeking proposals for the next season of exhibitions with engaging curatorial concepts that will take place at FOCA’s Chinatown exhibition space in January, May and September of 2014.

The Fellows of Contemporary Art are an independent art organization that collaborates with the art community at large and nurtures the expression of creative freedom in support of contemporary California art and artists. FOCA’s Curator’s Exhibition Awards program has provided funding for forty-five exhibitions which have shown at forty-seven venues nationwide. Since 2006, FOCA Fellowships have been awarded to nine mid-career California artists. The latest chapter in our ongoing support for California art and artists is the Curator’s Laboratory, an ongoing series of exhibitions at FOCA’s Chinatown office, 970 North Broadway, Suite 208, Los Angeles 90012.

Since the first exhibition, “Stoneface,” in 2007, curated by Sarah LehrerGraiwer and Stacy Bengtson Fertig, the works of more than fifty emerging and established artists have been featured in eleven exhibitions. Each project involves public events and some form of documentation. More information about Curator’s Lab projects can be found at http://www.focala.org/curators-lab-open-call.  All proposals submitted by Tuesday, August 13, 2013 will be reviewed by the Curator’s Lab Committee which will select the Award finalists who will be asked to present their proposals to the committee in September. At that presentation the committee will choose the three award recipients for the 2014 exhibits. Group exhibitions are preferred.  The word “curator” is loosely defined and may include artists, writers or others who conceive of and organize an exhibit.

If you have an exhibition proposal you would like the committee to consider, please include the following in your proposal:

1. A one page narrative expressing your curatorial concept.

2. A budget that outlines how FOCA’s $1,000 Curator’s Lab Award would be used to support the project.

3. Information about the artists you plan to involve: artists’ first and last names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers, titles of work(s), year executed, media and dimensions.

4. An event you would plan during the run of the exhibit.

5. A publication for FOCA’s  archives.

Supplemental materials will be accepted in the following formats:

1. CD containing digital images, i.e., jpeg format

2. Photographic prints

Send your proposal to:
