An Opera, a Sculptural Event, a Gesamkunstwerk-Plus-Plus. A Scrying, an Orgy, an Excorcism. Sin, Salvation, Art and Song. Crescent City Hyper-opera

My understanding is that the hyper-opera Crescent City will occupy the 25,000 square feet of Atwater Crossing with sculptural installations by Mason Cooley, Brianna Gorton, Katie Grinnan, Alice Könitz, Jeff Kopp and Olga Koumoundouros. These sculptures will be visitable by you and me during the day, as would any such ambitious installation in a museum. As the sun sets, however, an equally stellar group of performing artists will… um, crawl out of the woodwork and activate these dynamic-now-sets/sculptures by throwing lines, and words, and music, and drama from Anne LeBaron’s and Douglas Kearney’s Crescent City.

Metaphorical punches will land on the body politic! Allegory will be committed! A Good Human may be found and this can save Crescent City from certain disaster! A mythical voodoo priestess will rise from a glittering black swamp and launch her craft across the dank water of the city seeking this mythical Good Human, and so will begin the crepuscular, orgiastic search through a forsaken dreamland as we meet, and love, the degenerate denizens who remain in the threatened former (and metaphorical) Big Easy.

Strike One: a previous hurricane wiped out the population, leaving only pimps, sissies, thieves and an aging drag queen to carry on the centuries of history.

Strike Two: Hurricane Charity approaches and now even the ghosts flee.

Strike Three: Hah! With Doom upon them, our heroes muster their strength. Will this fair city in sin survive? Buy tickets for Crescent City and find out!!! Yay. More fun than most things.

The Industry’s highly anticipated inaugural production!

May 10-27, 2012
Atwater Crossing
3245 Casitas Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90039

Featured twice in New York City Opera’s VOX showcase of new American opera, Crescent City tells a fantastical tale of a mythical city destroyed by one hurricane and the voodoo priestess determined to save it.

The Industry’s production takes place in an industrial space and immerses the audience in a 360-degree landscape comprised of visual artists’ responses to the six chief locations of the opera.

The space remains open during the day for visitors to view the installations for free, while at night the pieces are transformed as the unique visual site of the performance.

Tickets on sale here starting April 1!
