The Action Bureau
GIVING TO GOOD PEOPLE IS A GOOD THING TO DO.
THE ACTION BUREAU is a curatorial collective dedicated to furthering the discourse connecting contemporary and historical performance art. Founded in Los Angeles by artists Parker Davis and Paul Waddell, and subsequently joined by Catherine Taft, the group aims to re-establish the boundaries between the specific discipline of action-based, body-centric performance art and those of the performative arts(music, dance, theater, spoken word). While not averse to works which transgress the divisions between these practices, THE ACTION BUREAU insists on a kind of performance art which maintains a rigorous engagement with the rich history and basic fundamentals of the medium. The BUREAU seeks to promote this discourse, both locally and abroad, through the production of live-art events, exhibitions, lectures, print and multimedia publications, and our blog.
THE FREE CLINIC, is a series of events organized by THE ACTION BUREAU, which provides a platform for contemporary artists to present new works in performance to the Los Angeles audience. The CLINIC pairs emerging and established artists from Los Angeles and abroad, seeking to foster the development of a discourse between participants. By curating exhibitions with artists who share intersections of method and practice, The BUREAU aims to provide an entry point for audience members into the growing discourse surrounding the medium. In this same spirit, a small zine-style publication featuring photographs and writing on the participating artists’ work is produced and distributed free-of-charge to attendees. The series is hosted by Human Resources, the performance-focused art collective occupying the former Cottage Home space in L.A.’s Chinatown gallery district.
We are currently accepting submissions for inclusion on our tumblr and proposals for possible collaborations on events, exhibitions, lectures and publications.
Please email us at [email protected] if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions. We are eager to open a dialogue!
Dear Friends & Colleagues,
We are excited to announce that Free Clinic #2 will take place on October 13th, and will again be hosted by Human Resources. Free Clinic #2 is the next installment in an ongoing series of of action-based, body-centric performance events that pair Los Angeles-based artists with the larger international performance community. Organized by The Action Bureau, our curatorial collective based here in L.A., Free Clinic #2 will bring together Internationally renowned artists Marilyn Arsem (Boston, MA) and Alejandra Herrera (Los Angeles, CA, b. Santiago, Chile), and one more LA artist to be announced, to perform new work at this exciting event.
We are honored that these artists have agreed to participate in Free Clinic #2, and it is a fundamental goal to keep the experience of the Free Clinic free for all attendees. However, we are still a very new curatorial collective and we have not yet found a significant source of financial backing, so we are turning to you, our community, to help make these first events a reality.
We are humbly soliciting help to meet our funding goal of $2000 by October 1st. These funds will be used to cover the cost of airfare for Ms. Arsem, the three artists’ materials and a small honorarium for each, the publication of a small zine to be distributed for free at the performance, and refreshments for the night of the event. You can read our official press release for Free Clinic #2 here. To give you a sense of the scale and ambition of this project, documentation of our first Free Clinic can be found here.
To thank you for your help, we are offering a range of killer gifts for donations at all levels:

We are thrilled to be able to present such important and timely performance art in Los Angeles and we can’t wait for this event. However, we really need the extra support in order to make Free Clinic #2 the best possible event ever. We are accepting donations via PayPal (because we are avoiding your money going to Kickstarter and Amazon which surprisingly take a sizable amount of any funds raised).
