FOCA Curator’s Lab Open Call

Hi friends,

The good people at FOCA are preparing for another season of exhibitions at their space in Chinatown. Please review the information below, and note that proposals are due by August 19, 2011.

The Fellows of Contemporary Art

FOCA is pleased to offer an open call for curatorial submissions for its

Curatorial Laboratory program. We are currently looking for exhibitions

with engaging curatorial concepts that would take place at FOCA’s

Chinatown exhibition space in Winter and Spring of 2012.

The Fellows of Contemporary Art is an independent art organization that

collaborates with the art community at large and nurtures the expression of

creative freedom in support of contemporary California art and artists.

FOCAʼs Curatorʼs Exhibition Awards have provided funding for forty-five

exhibitions which have shown at forty-seven venues nationwide. Since

2006, FOCA Fellowships have been awarded to six mid-career California

The latest chapter in our ongoing support for California art and artists is the

Curatorʼs Laboratory, an ongoing series of exhibitions at FOCA’s

Chinatown office, 970 North Broadway, Suite 208, Los Angeles 90012.

Since the first exhibition, “Stoneface,” in 2007, curated by Sarah Lehrer-

Graiwer and Stacy Bengtson Fertig, the works of twenty-five emerging or

established artists have been featured in six exhibitions. Each project

involves public events and some form of documentation. More information

about Curatorʼs Lab projects can be found at

Originating with Catherine “Kitty” Chesterʼs generous gift to the Fellows,

FOCA is now publicly seeking proposals for the next season of exhibitions.

FOCAʼs Curatorʼs Lab committee is looking for exhibits with strong

curatorial concepts involving California-based artists that would take place

during Winter and Spring 2012.

All proposals submitted by Friday, August 19 will be reviewed by the

committee which will select the Curatorʼs Laboratory Award recipients and

schedule the exhibits. Group exhibitions are preferred. The word “curator”

is loosely defined and may include artists or writers or others who conceive

of and organize an exhibit.

If you have an exhibition proposal you would like us to consider, please

include the following in your proposal:

1. A one page narrative expressing your curatorial concept.

2. A budget that outlines how FOCAʼs $1,000 Curatorʼs Award would be

used to support the project.

3. Information about the artists you plan to involve: artistsʼ first and last

names, titles of work(s), year executed, media and dimensions.

Supplemental materials will be accepted in the following formats:

1. CD containing digital images, i.e., jpeg format

2. Photographic prints
