Tom Allen, "Summerlands," 2010 32 1/4x29" Link to Telles Fine Art. I tell you right now is a great time to see paintings in the city. Tom Allen, for example. His show Summerlands at Telles is another of the shows I won't sleep until everybody goes to see. Screw my grammar - GO LOOK AT TOM'S PAINTINGS!
Tyler Vlahovich "Etching White" 48x56" 2010 from the exhibition "I Drank the Kool Aid" at WPA Gallery. Do not be decieved by what appears to be a simple white painting with etched looking drawing. Tyler's paintings are not usually white or shiny. Aiming for something approaching a drawing, he used oil paint and printer's medium on a black wood panel and etched with a blue prismacolor. It dried shiny. Thinking to himself, "This is so fucked-up," he painted more. You painters, go see these and tell me what you think. They are right on the edge - teetering into really new territory - and they are just what I need to see.
Ok, ok, ok - the above image is indeed a detail of "Etching White," this image is the whole.... damn.... band. Link to Millie Jackson's early hip hop profanity-filled song "Ugly Men." No implied judgment of Tyler's looks, just this song popped into my head because of the "whole..... damn.... etc." You gotta listen to the whole song to hear it but it's sooooo worth it. Like a good painting! LIsten while you look. Yay! Tyler Yay! Millie.
Brian Sharp, Altered State, 2009 28x22" this from Shaheen Gallery in Cleveland. Sharp has an exhibition at ACME that you should see on Saturday. When I get images I'll post them.
Tyler Vlahovich, "Wooden Command Center" 2000. Imagine all the information in this image, multiply it by what you can guess to be the size of the room and then imagine that information packed into a shiny white 48x60" canvas with blue-black abstract drawing etched into it. Go to WPA and see Vlahovich's show.

We met in a seaside town, on a sidewalk shiny from light rain. He waited near a control joint and I approached from a shadow. His light (evident in the reflection on the buckle of my shoe) shined into my heart. There were leaves - yellow, green and brown. David and me in Capitola, CA.
Driving south on Hwy 1 from San Francisco to Hwy 33 and Santa Cruz I didn't see much out of the windows...
A pretty cool image of the above-mentioned Yunhee Min installation "Continuum: Structure #003" Link to one of Min's own links, Artist Curated Projects. Life is good.

Lecia Dole-Recio, Untitled "(pch.red.cnvs.) 2010 58x49" Link to Telles Fine Art. You're thinking, "Geoff, you posted this image last week." Right-o. Dole-Recio is among the best painters in LA - which by default makes her one of the best, period. When you go to Telles, ask to see the orange painting in the office. I swear that seeing it will change your way of understanding what your eyes tell you. LECIA HITS ONE OUT OF THE PARK. AGAIN.
